About Tierney M. Miller
“Each of my works captures not only a visual interpretation, but includes the spiritual nature of a moment…”
While attending high school & college, Tierney’s interest in travel led her to pursue a career in photo-journalism. The time spent behind the camera and in the darkroom greatly enhanced her observation skills and refined her eye for detail.
Until recently, designing, owning and operating retail establishments has been Tierney’s primary professional focus. She has always had an appreciation for art & was considering a second career in art brokerage & appraisal, when a major turning point came in the summer of 1996. On a whim she decided to enroll in a fine art painting class. She returned to Western State College in Gunnison, CO and earned her BFA in Sculpture in 1999. She has been creating and exhibiting her art ever since.
Serving as a catalyst for her work, Tierney’s passion for travel continues. She leaves home every chance she gets to search for the things she loves to paint.
Originally from Wisconsin, Tierney has been calling Gunnison, Colorado home since 1980.
Miller feels that much of art is an expression of her subconscious and it’s influence on her work manifests through intuition. At the same time, creation demands powers of concentration combined with mental enthusiasm and discipline in order to find the path to balance.
Each of her works captures not only a visual interpretation, but includes the spiritual nature of a specific moment. In one sense her art is a very private, personal journey in search of order, reasons, reality, reflection, & beauty. In another sense it is a means of communication –how she perceives the external world and how the skills she has developed as an artist transform those responses into new images and forms that she can return to the external world.
Tierney’s current body of work is made up of two parts, Contemporary Western and Abstracts.
Although Tierney’s paintings often reflect a variety of locations and subjects, she often finds herself pulling inspiration for new works from things close to home. She is intrigued with the ranching heritage of the American West. And living in Gunnison, Colorado she finds ample opportunities to observe these Western traditions, interpreting and documenting them in her own way.
Tierney’s abstract fields are aesthetic arrangements imbued with rich texture and surfaces incorporating successive elaborations. She uses layers upon layers of paint to create depth and interest with complexity and subtleties of color. Initially obscured on the surface, the layers begin to reveal themselves creating an underlying sense of mystery inviting the viewer to respond. As in life, it is we who give meaning to her art. What is important is the experience one has in relationship to her work.
Tierney strongly believes that art is not about art. It is about life
and all it’s countless manifestations. Art serves us by presenting ideas in visual forms so that we can see, think about, communicate through and perhaps better understand. Art is about our relationship to others and our world. Creating is Tierney’s Raison De’tre, her reason for being.
